When a baby is born with a congenital cataract, the diagnosis often comes with a great deal of uncertainty. For many parents, surgery is seen as the definitive solution and the end of the journey. However, at Enfoca’t, we know that surgical intervention is, in fact, the starting point of a new and essential stage: visual learning.
What is a congenital cataract?
A congenital cataract is an opacity in the crystalline lens, the eye’s natural lens, which is present from birth. Because it is not transparent, like a clean window, this whitish lens prevents light and images from reaching the brain properly during the key months of visual development.
This interference affects the baby’s vision and makes eye-brain coordination more difficult, a process that is essential for developing healthy eyesight and mastering eye movements.

Surgery vs visual learning
It is very common for families to believe that, once the cataract has been removed, the child can already see perfectly. But surgery only resolves the physical problem in the eye: it removes the obstacle that was preventing light from entering. What comes afterwards is just as important: the brain needs to learn how to interpret that light, and this does not happen automatically.
That is precisely the role of visual therapy: to train the visual system so that it can reach its full potential, just like a muscle that, after months without being used, needs rehabilitation before regaining its strength.
Brain plasticity: A unique window of opportunity
We are often asked what happens if there is no follow-up with visual therapy. If the brain does not receive quality visual stimuli during the first months of life, the so-called critical period of development, it loses the opportunity to create strong connections. This could lead to amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, or deprivation strabismus.

How does visual therapy help?
Early visual stimulation → We work on gaze shifts, fixation and tracking using high-contrast objects, such as black and white patterns, and bright colours, awakening the baby’s interest in their surroundings.
Eye-hand coordination → We help the baby connect what they see with what they touch, overcoming the motor difficulties that cataracts often slow down initially.
Integration of binocularity → If the cataract was monocular, we work so that both eyes learn to function as a team and strabismus is avoided. If it was bilateral, we work on coordinating both eyes.
Support in adapting to occlusion therapy, patches or lenses → We support the use of glasses, contact lenses or occlusion patches, making this process less traumatic and more integrated for the child.
Tips for parents at home
Visual therapy does not end in the consultation room. The home environment plays a fundamental role in the child’s progress.
- Light games in dark rooms: In rooms with dim lighting, the use of contrasts activates the visual system in an effective and stimulating way.
- Games with texture, sound and colour: The richer the stimulus, the stronger the connection between what the child sees and what they experience.
- Patience and consistency: The visual journey of these children is a long-distance race, not a sprint. Every small step forward counts and adds up.
